In the dying days of 2018, severe storms tore through Southwest Tasmania near Gell River, peppering the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) with thousands of dry lightning strikes. This sparked some of the island’s worst recorded bushfires, razing over 200,000 ha of pristine wilderness. These fires burned for nearly 6 months, ensuring much of the area remained barren for some time post-fire.
I’ve been documenting the recovery of the region ever since, including some of the first on-the-ground coverage acquired within days of the front’s progress through the Styx and Florentine Valleys taken with my good friend Luke Tscharke. This vision has captured the progress of recovery through its various phases and across the seasons, up to now where much of the area has shown marked regrowth and disguises the prior devastation to the casual onlooker.
