Being disabled myself, as well as an accessibility advocate and designer for nearly two and a half decades, the way people access the web – and especially my own sites – is incredibly important. As such, the site should remain functional, readable, and beautiful across keyboard-only, no-JavaScript, reduced-motion, and high-contrast constraints and honour them properly and gracefully. My goal isn’t isn’t to just make the site remain functional – I want it to remain a genuinely enjoyable experience for everybody, no matter how they interact.
Formally, the site is built to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 standards, the same rules that apply to websites provided by governments, educational institutions and similar across much of the world. Conforming to these standards is totally voluntary for standard websites, but why breeze past them if we don’t need to?
Site Preferences
Every aspect of the site has been designed from the ground up to support a range of functional, typographic, stylistic, and other accessible configurations. The Site Preferences configurator includes facets to control contrast, reduced motion, reduced transparency, underlined links, stronger focus, captions, reading mode, and image display controls across the site.
In addition, in the footer, there is a global toggle to control whether the site presents in light or dark mode. The default is to honour whatever your device is natively set to — that is, if you have dark mode enabled on your device, the site will present with the dark base; likewise, if it is not set, the base will default to a light tone.
Progressive enhancement
Everything on the site should function no matter what you use to access it. Core navigation, commerce routes, forms, and preference choices use semantic links, labels, buttons, and status messages to deliver functionality. JavaScript is used in places to make changes immediate, but the pages should remain readable even without it.
