Weather

Australia is infamous for having one of the most diverse range of weather patterns anywhere. From the deep, frigid cold of southern winters, through to the unpredictable and often destructive energy found in summer storms, to immense drought and desertification across the majority of the continent, there is few types of weather we don’t experience.

Night Turn Electric

Night Turn Electric

Before I moved to Tasmania, I spent a significant amount of time chasing the storms that arrive in the dying months of every year. Sometimes that’d see me on the road, driving hundreds of miles into the night.

This particular evening, I chased a system which was developing on NSW’s central coast and moving northwards. I left from work in Brisbane in the afternoon to intercept it in the Northern Rivers, eventually being pushed back from Ballina to Byron Bay’s historic lighthouse, the Australian continent’s most easterly point.

Being pinned down for hours under an awning as the sky throws its biggest bolts at you is an experience you don’t soon forget.
