The largest of the honeyeaters, endemic to Tasmania, reaching 45 centimetres with a long, pendulous yellow-orange wattle and black-streaked crown. It feeds on eucalypt and banksia nectar plus insects, and its harsh call has been likened to a person coughing or belching.
