Deciduous beech (Nothofagus gunnii, NT)

Also known as tanglefoot or fagus, this is the only native deciduous tree in Tasmania and the only cold-climate, winter-deciduous tree species in Australia. Confined to alpine and sub-alpine terrain above roughly 800 metres, its small, crinkled leaves turn gold — sometimes deep red — each autumn, an event known locally as the turning of the fagus.
